From: Senator_Leahy@leahy.senate.gov Sent: Monday, April 28, 2008 2:13 PM Subject: From Senator Patrick Leahy Dear Mr. L.: Thank you for contacting me about Internet gambling, and online poker in particular. I appreciate hearing from you. Vermonters have spoken clearly that they do not want certain types of gambling permitted in our state. I have long been an advocate for legislation that ensures that existing laws keep pace with developing technology. For this reason, I have supported legislation to ensure that our nation’s gambling laws keep pace with developing technology. In the 110th Congress, there are two bills that focus on Internet gambling pending in the House of Representatives. On April 26, 2007, Congressman Frank introduced H.R. 2046, the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act of 2007. This bill would create an exemption to the current ban on gambling online by allowing the Director of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network to license Internet gambling facilities. In addition, on June 6, 2007, Congressman Wexler introduced H.R. 2610, the Skill Game Protection Act, which places “skill games” in a separate category from other gambling-related activities. So far, companion legislation has not been introduced in the Senate. I appreciate your specific concern regarding online poker. I support your right to play poker online, but, that said, a distinction must be made between the right to play online poker and the right to gamble on online poker, the latter of which I do not support. Thank you again for contacting me, and please keep in touch.
